This was your typical base hostel modern and samey with no characteristics. It was located on the edge of the Kuirau Thermal Park and had its own (very cheap) bar next door. The one thing we loved most about this hostel was the hot water pool outside.
Staff & Atmosphere
The staff were friendly and helpful enough especially s they had to deal with 20+ of us checking in at the same time. However we did later hear they locked everyone out in the pool when they closed reception at 10pm. They then shouted at the guests they had locked out for using the fire exit! It felt very quiet but this was probably due to the mid-winter season however despite the lack of atmosphere it meant the hostel was lovely and clean.
Communal Areas
The pool was certainly a highlight for us. I was not convinced that it would be warm when I dipped my toes in; proven wrong within five minutes I had gone to get changed and swim. There was a TV room and lovely bright clean kitchen on the second level. The bar next to the hostel did great pizzas and other food all for cheap prices. However when we went over for dinner it was DEAD! I’m sure that was just the time of year as the drinks were reasonably priced and the food was yummy.
I really liked that each room had its own toilet and separate shower between the eight of us. Although you risk having to queue I really liked not having to leave the room. The pool was great and the reason we chose to stay at Base. Otherwise it was just your average Base hostel, nothing bad but nothing great either.
