Aquarius Byron Bay Hostel Review

Aquarius Byron Bay Hostel Review

Upon a recommendation of others we had met, we booked 3 nights over the weekend here, and oh what a blast we had. At $25 a night for an 8 bed dorm room this was the cheapest hostel we stayed in but it was also the best value for money – especially as each room had an en suite bathroom and balcony. With an onsite bar and café at the cheapest prices you’ll find in Byron and activities organised most nights, it really was a place to socialise and party.

This hostel was the most friendly and welcoming hostel I have stayed in over the years, with a free drink on the evening you arrive – a ‘host’ greets you and gives you some information about the up and coming night. The onsite bar makes it a very easy place to socialise and enjoy a little bit too much alcohol. Most people were here to enjoy a good time over the weekend but there were also others just looking for work or chilling out.

We were picked up by a free bus to and from the transit centre. When we arrived it was very early and the guy was more hung-over than we were tired from an overnight bus, but that didn’t matter – we soon learnt that at 8am Byron was a sleepy place. After that, the later it got in the day the more alive and friendly the staff became – everyone was helpful and friendly. Again half of the staff seemed to be backpackers like you and I who worked hard and played harder.

Communal Areas
There were plenty of areas for everyone to chill and socialise; as I mentioned before the bar was the best part of this hostel and with a second part of the bar being pool side it made chilling out and drinking a little too easy. They had a games area – not free but full of all kinds of games. And then out the back was a kitchen – I never actually used the kitchen due to receiving free meals every evening (if you bought a drink) and the aqua café joined to the hostel did such cheap breakfast there was no need to cook ourselves.

This hostel was mostly a party hostel as the first night we stayed here I was awoken by drunk dorm mates returning at 5 am. However the next night we just watched a film in bed and that seemed fine too – no one woke us up either. If you don’t want to party definitely don’t come at the weekend, but the weekdays are a little tamer. Location is great with less than five minutes to the beach or Main Street of Byron. The free dinner every day of your stay is huge plus (well not completely free, you do have to purchase a drink but this can be anything and beers are only $5 so pretty good deal really). The bar runs happy hour 7.30 – 9 pm every night with a drink always as cheap as $3; this is a hostel completely built for the backpacker experience.
