Queenstown is the adrenaline capital of New Zealand and the number one place to stop if your a backpacker. It has adventure, snow, nightlife, and crazy heart racing activities. I had several new experiences in Queenstown, some I had planned for like getting my first snowboarding lesson and some I hadn’t like jumping off a canyon swing.
There are two main companies in Queenstown: A J and Hackett and Shotover Canyon Swing – as it says on the tin this one is a Canyon Swing and AJ and Hackett have both but are most famous for the Nevis Bungy the highest in New Zealand. I had always ruled out doing a bungy jump as I have a back injury and know that the pull of the cord will aggravate my back. So when my boyfriend won a free Canyon Swing through Kiwi Experience I assumed I would just stand and watch. Luckily or unluckily depending on how you see it the set up of a swing is completely different to a bungy and therefore I found myself being strapped in to a harness and preparing myself to swing over a canyon.
I had always thought it was something I really wanted to do, when I went to watch my friends in South Africa jump off the bridge bungy I was filled with jealously and a longing to get the rush they were experiencing. However when it was my turn to jump off the canyon – strapped to my boyfriend I may add – I was petrified!!
